When was the last time you survived without your phone? Why having no WiFi connection seems to be a burden? Disconnect - that is what my piece is all about. Due to the fast development, and ubiquitous impact of technology, many people do not appreciate nature as we used to. Our phones are glued to our hands, that the absence of such brilliant technology, can cause slight depression. In order for me to communicate my message, I used the style called mixed media, which was foreign to me the first time I've heard of it. I used different materials such as old magazines, painted/colored paper and acrylic paint. While different techniques include pasting, cutting and measuring. I personally believe that technology created a barrier between us and Mother Nature. As time goes by, we seem to be more astonished with our creations than the creation we are part of. I am not saying we have to completely abandon the things that make our life easier, but we just need to remember to breathe, appreciate how beautiful life is, and disconnect.

Artist Statement
"To Kill A Mockingbird", written by Harper Lee, is one of literature's greatest masterpiece. Themes such as courage, perspective, bigotry and prejudice were present. My artwork symbolizes the two kinds of people - white and colored, hopeless romantics and realists, the good and the bad. My artwork was inspired by Lee's work and shows that even though one might be different from another, we all came from dust and will return to dust.
Behind this artwork, different skills and techniques were used. 70% of the artwork was created by the stippling technique. Color blending was also very important to show the underlying meaning of the artwork. This artwork is very important to me because I believe that everyone of us has the right to make their own choices - it may be for physical or emotional purposes. I think some parts of the world are not given the right to do the things that please or inspire them. I believe that you are not living if you could not make your own choices.

There are a lot of medical terms inscribed to my piece, and when people will see my work for the first time, without a doubt, they will be perplexed why I engraved surgical terms on my pen holder. My piece was inspired by my love of writing, calligraphy and medicine, Writing for pleasure, and communicating different types of data are of the few hobbies and obligations I do as a student. The medical terms engraved are clues on what I want to do in the near future, specifically Neurosurgery - acronyms such as MIR and PET are of the most common medical terms used in this field of surgery. Few simple techniques were used such as cutting irregular shapes to achieve the cylindrical form, and finding the perfect font to emphasize the shape of my piece. I personally believe that my piece reflects more of my future and less of me - the words emphasize what I really want to do, and less of my personality.

In 2008, ABC News surprised us with startling statistics regarding the decrease in the surgeon-to-population ratio over the years. (8:10,000) The same applies to different professions that require graduate school such as lawyers, educational administrators and researchers. With the rise of college fees, including materials such as textbooks and equipment, the American Dream continues to defer for young Americans and immigrants. The main reason why I did my piece was because the cost of schooling creates a barrier between students and their dreams.
To emphasize the theme, "Art as Activism", I used different painting materials such as cardboard, paintbrushes and acrylic paints. I wanted my piece to stand out in the crowd rather than make it look like a museum like art piece, so I used cardboard. As time goes by, the cost of attending college seems unfeasible. With these facts, people are becoming cynical and would think little of themselves. And I wouldn't be surprised because the world makes it arduous for them to achieve their dreams. I made my art work because they should strive for their best and be who they want to be, because I believe everybody has the potential to be somebody. But most importantly, I want the government, especially the Department of Education to consider the amount that they are getting from students.
